Let the games begin- the official candidate for PD (partito democratico) was announced last week in Friuli Venezia-Giulia. Massimo Moretuzzo will be running against Lega’s Massimiliano Fedriga (the current FVG president) in the April regional elections.

Massimo Moretuzzo

Massimo Moretuzzo, 47, former mayor of Mereto di Tomba, is no stranger to Italy’s cut-throat politics.

A big supporter of Mario Draghi’s government, Mr Moretuzzo has found common cause with regional Five Star movement, as well as Patto per l’autonomia, Civica Fvg, Unione slovena, Articolo uno, Open Fvg and Alleanza verdi sinistra.

The center-left leader’s main goal is to stop the hard right taking power in Friuli Venezia-Giulia.

The national PD backs a €9 (£8; $9) minimum wage to cover some three million workers and wants to: make it easier for children of immigrants to obtain citizenship; combat anti-LGBT discrimination and legalise gay marriage.

Moretuzzo will be running against Massimiliano Fedriga, 42, the current FVG president, as well as the president of the regions.

The April Elections

On 2 April and 3 April Friuli Venezia Giulia will go to the polls for the 2023 regional and municipal elections. The Statute of Autonomy of our regions requires the Region to go to the polls for the renewal of the Council and the election of the president on a day between the fourth Sunday prior and the second following the date of the previous vote.

In April, the administrative elections will also take place in 19 Municipalities of the Region, two of which – Udine and Sacile – with a population of more than 15,000 inhabitants and therefore subject to a ballot.

European nationals with a valid permesso di soggiorno are eligible to vote in regional elections.
