Croatia was shaken near Rijeka, Primorsko-Goranska Županija, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.3 around 10.30 am this Thursday, 16 February, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Rijeka, Primorsko-Goranska Županija, Croatia, in the morning on Thursday, February 16th, 2023, at 10:47 am local time.
Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Trieste dwellers report having felt the earthquake as well.
