Italy celebrates the 76th Festa della Liberazione on April 25th, an annual public holiday marking the country’s liberation from German occupation and fascist rule at the end of World War Two.

Traditionally the day is marked with large rallies in Trieste, with all public offices and most shops closed across Italy.

25th of April is a very important day for Trieste and every year it is commemorated inside the Risiera di San Sabba, a place that reminds us of the dark days in the history of Trieste.

The Festa della Liberazione remains a divisive holiday in Italy, coming under attack each year from politicians on the right who refuse to celebrate the event.
