From May 24th to June 10th, the Festival dedicated to the sea returns to celebrate the Decade of the Oceans.

The third edition of MareDireFare – Festival dell’Oceano was presented this morning, 19 May. For more than two weeks, from May 24th to June 10th, the festival will take place in various locations in the capital of Friuli Venezia Giulia to promote maritime culture. The initiative was born on the occasion of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), proclaimed to reflect on the conservation and future of marine resources, from an idea by WWF Area Marina Protetta di Miramare and the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics – OGS

The initiative was presented at a press conference held in the Bobi Bazlen Room of Palazzo Gopcevich by Maurizio De Blasio – Councillor for Citizen Security Policies of the Municipality of Trieste, Paola Del Negro – Director General of the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics – OGS, and Maurizio Spoto – Director of the Marine Protected Area of Miramare – AMP. Also present were: Pierpaolo Zanchetta – PO Biodiversity Service of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region, Captain Roberto Fedele -Maritime Directorate of Friuli Venezia Giulia – Capitaneria di Porto di Trieste, and Adriano Kovačič – President of ZKB.

Promoters – The 2023 event is co-organized with the Municipality of Trieste, the cultural association Museo della Bora, and Editoriale Scienza, in collaboration with Ibby Italy, the Maritime Directorate of Friuli Venezia Giulia – Capitaneria di Porto di Trieste, Festival Scienza e Virgola, Azienda sanitaria universitaria Giuliano Isontina (ASUGI), FVG Delegation of Marevivo, GeoAdriatico, Boramata, Trieste City of Knowledge, the European Fund for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (FEAMP), Techera Project, FIPSAS, the Italian Association of Libraries, and WWF YOUng. The Festival is made possible thanks to the contribution of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Fondazione CRTrieste , and ZKB, with the media partnership of Il Piccolo and RAI FVG.

The Program – The Festival consists, as tradition dictates, of numerous initiatives aimed at everyone. The main events are related to the Art & Science combination: a photography exhibition, a street art exhibition, and an eco-route with installations. Other activities such as workshops for children and teenagers, informative meetings, and scientific aperitifs will take place in various locations between the city center and Miramare, the seat of the Marine Protected Area. Here is a summary of the main events. The schedule and registration details are available at: www.maredirefare.it

The Art & Science Thread

Photography Exhibition – The photography exhibition “Dentro e fuori dall’acqua. L’Ambiente di marea dell’Alto Adriatico” (Inside and Outside the Water. The Tidal Environment of the Upper Adriatic), conceived by photographer and science communicator Lorenzo Peter Castelletto, is dedicated to the border of the sea, the incredible “in-between world” that develops where the mainland meets the sea, in an area that is periodically submerged by water and then re-emerges, “challenging” its inhabitants to survive constant variations in salinity, temperature, hydration, the force of waves, and attacks by marine and land predators. The exhibition is located at the Trieste City of Knowledge Space in the Central Station of Trieste (Piazza della Libertà 11) and can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 am to 7:30 pm. Guided tours are available by reservation at https://bit.ly/VisiteDFA2023. Opening: Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at 5 pm.

Street Art Exhibition – The Arturo Fittke Municipal Hall (Piazza Piccola 3) will host the exhibition “Il mare inizia in città” (The Sea Begins in the City). This is the exhibition of works by Laura Galeazzo, Bernardino Not, and Nicole Pillepich, illustrators who won the “Art & Science” competition promoted by the organizers of MareDireFare to create street art pieces that raise awareness about the impact of improper waste disposal on the sea. Exhibition hours: May 25th from 10 am to 12:30 pm and from 3 pm to 6 pm; May 26th, June 1st, and June 6th from 3 pm to 6 pm, and May 27th from 10 am to 12:30 pm.

The eco-route – The artworks exhibited in the Fittke Hall will be placed around the drains in the center of Trieste, in an itinerary that runs between the Canal Grande in Piazza Ponterosso and the adjacent streets. Accompanying the artworks are scenic installations curated by artist Elisabetta Milan, aimed at raising citizens’ awareness of the long-standing problem of marine waste and the theme of collective responsibility in caring for and conserving the ocean. The eco-route, created by OGS and AMP Miramare in collaboration with the FVG Delegation of Marevivo, will be inaugurated on Thursday, May 25th, at 10 am, with a meeting in front of the Church of Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo (Piazza Sant’Antonio Nuovo). Guided tours: Thursday, May 25th, at 10 am and 4 pm, and Tuesday, June 6th, at 5 pm.

Key Events

Anniversaries – The MareDireFare Festival intersects with two fundamental anniversaries for the study and protection of the “big blue.” The first is the 50th anniversary of the concession of the water mirror in front of Miramare Castle to WWF, to create a “Marine Park for the Conservation of the Flora and Fauna of the Upper Adriatic” which later gave rise to the Marine Protected Area of Miramare in 1986. The anniversary will be celebrated on May 27th and 28th, 2023, with a series of events dedicated to children and teenagers, as well as curious individuals of all ages, featuring workshops, readings, and games.

The second “anniversary” is the 270th anniversary of the Foundation of the Maritime School of Astronomy and Navigation, established in Trieste by the Jesuits at the request of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. From its roots, institutions such as the ISIS Nautico “T. di Savoia – L. Galvani,” the National Institute of Astrophysics Astronomical Observatory of Trieste – INAF, the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics – OGS, the National Research Council Institute of Marine Sciences CNR-ISMAR, and the city’s library system have developed over the years. This anniversary is scheduled for June 8th, the World Oceans Day. After a private meeting in the morning, at 5:30 pm there will be a conference at the Auditorium of the Revoltella Museum in Trieste about the Laura Bassi, the research icebreaker ship, returning from the 38th Italian Expedition of the National Research Program in Antarctica.

World Days – The Festival MareDireFare embraces two global days dedicated to nature conservation: June 5th, “World Environment Day” and June 8th, “World Oceans Day”. On both occasions, there will be in-depth events dedicated to professionals as well as informative conferences open to all. On Monday, June 5th, starting at 9:30 am, there will also be the Cleaning of the Seabed and Beaches in the Lazzaretto di Muggia area.

Scientific Aperitifs – On Wednesday, May 24th, and Tuesday, June 6th, at 6 pm, the Antico Caffè San Marco (via Battisti 18) will host the Scientific Aperitifs “Biodiversità dell’ecosistema marino: una ricchezza da studiare e proteggere” (Biodiversity of the Marine Ecosystem: A Wealth to Study and Protect) and “Una finestra sul futuro degli oceani: il Laboratorio Naturale di Panarea” (A Window into the Future of the Oceans: The Natural Laboratory of Panarea). These events, a combination of scientific dissemination and tasting, will feature the interventions of researchers and marine biologists, aiming to contribute to creating a more informed, responsible, and engaged society in the protection of the “big blue.”

BoraMata – MareDireFare will also be the setting for the BoraMata event, the wind festival in the city of Bora, which will bring back the famous pinwheels and kites to Piazza Unità on Saturday, June 3rd, and Sunday, June 4th, 2023.

Program and Registration – The complete program of MareDireFare is available at http://www.maredirefare.it/ where you can check the events that require reservations and the registration process. All festival events are free of charge.
