Over 300 Signatures Collected in a Campaign by Researchers

Commuting to prestigious research centers in Trieste using sustainable transportation has become a daily challenge for researchers. Particularly during peak hours, Line 6, the only direct link between Trieste Center and Grignano, fails to meet the growing passenger demand, especially during the summer season.

A group of workers has initiated a signature collection campaign, which has already collected over 300 signatures from individuals who frequent the campuses of Grignano, where OGS, ICTP, and SISSA are located. These signatures will be submitted to the municipality and Trieste Trasporti to request an enhancement of public transportation services.

“Due to overcrowding, the buses are preventing many citizens and tourists, including school groups, from boarding and utilizing the service,” stated Elisa Donati and other doctoral students from the University of Trieste at OGS, who are leading the signature collection alongside their colleagues from ICTP. The group emphasizes that the situation worsens during the summer season, before Line 36 becomes fully operational, which is expected to alleviate congestion on Line 6. However, throughout the summer period, Line 36 does not resolve the issue. Many travelers still prefer using Line 6 to directly reach Grignano Castle or go beyond Giardino Pubblico towards S. Giovanni, for tourism or residential purposes. Furthermore, numerous beach-goers continue to rely on Line 6, disregarding the availability of Line 36, which offers greater passenger capacity.

Consequently, researchers, tourists, and commuters are forced to travel under extremely uncomfortable conditions and, in some cases, resort to alternative transportation methods that are not always sustainable, such as using private cars.”

The group has also presented several proposals, including extending all Line 6 buses to Miramare, which currently only stop at Carducci during the winter season; increasing capacity and frequency during peak hours; enhancing Line 36 to promote its use for those intending to visit the seaside; granting access to Miramare-Trieste Centrale trains for individuals with a TPL bus pass; and potentially adding a train morning trip. Lastly, there is also a request to improve cycling infrastructure to ensure the safety of those who choose sustainable transportation for work, tourism, or leisure.

The researchers have requested a meeting with the Councilor for Urban Planning Babuder and the Institutional Relations Manager of Trieste Trasporti Scozzai to deliver the collected signatures and discuss the proposed measures.
