Located in the north-eastern regions of Italy, Udine has a modest charm that will invigorate the senses of any passer-by. The largest province in the region of Friuli Venezia Guilia, Udine’s far-reaching terrain stretches from the south, at the Adriatic Sea, to the northern mountainous ranges and emphasizes the best of these two worlds. Hidden away from mass tourism Udine will not disappoint and is truly the hidden gem of Italy. From the panoramic alpine views, coastal landscapes, quaint restaurants and rich cultural history, Udine has something special for everyone.

Having a long-reaching history that wasn’t always completely Italian, Udine has an interesting background. Previously it was ruled by the Romans, Venetians and Lombards and during the medieval period it was an essential trading route. Today it neighbours with countries such as Austria, Slovenia and Croatia, and has in turn become a pivotal meeting place of vastly varying cultures.

The largest city of the province is named Udine, or also known as “the city of Tiepolo” named after the Venetian Baroque painter that lived and worked there and is just a two-hour car ride from Venice. The city dazzles with Venetian charm and the medieval centre Piazza Liberta, is said to be, “the most beautiful Venetian square on the mainland.” Prominent attractions include the town hall, Loggia Del Lionello, in Venetian-Gothic style, and opposite the blue and gold clock tower, Torre dell’Orologio, constructed similarly to, Piazza San Marco at Venice. Two medieval canals flow through the city, sometimes they are underground and at other times revealing themselves, adding to beautiful and enchanting environment.

About an hour’s drive north of the city are the majestic alps and with that comes a plethora of activities. There is no shortage of ski lodges, hikes and breathtaking views. You can find many agriturismi (farm stays) a unique experience to Italy. Immerse yourself in the farm life with traditional meals made from local produce or extend your stay at on site bed and breakfast.

Picturesque landscapes await across all the mountain ranges. Two exceptional destinations are the Fontanone di Goriuda, a waterfall that springs from inside the earth and into a crystal-clear lake, and Mt Lussari, accessed by cable car to witness the 14th century church, Sanctuary of Monte Lussari. Both these locations offer a unique perspective and exemplify the mountainous terrain.  These places are a wondrous place to visit anytime of the year and will continue to call you back to witness their breathtaking changing seasons.

Now to the southern and contrasting region of Udine, the coastal towns, a popular destination for any summer holiday reveller. Lignano Sabbiadoro, the most sought-after vacation spot, has a wide stretching golden beach equipped with hundreds of sunbeds, and restaurants and arcades nearby. Water sports are available from stand-up paddle boarding, kitesurfing, parasailing, windsurfing and sailing. The Beach Arena holds a sensational experience by hosting a sea of free concerts throughout the summer. Indulge in this unique atmosphere while you listen to the music with the sand under your feet, the stars above and the sounds of sea waves lapping the shore. Lignano is relatively busy during the summer and with internationals travelling from far and wide to relish in this Italian seaside escape, it is recommended to book your stay in advance.

Italy is full of historical sites and the province of Udine is no different. Aquileia, named a UNESCO site in 1998, is an ancient city of Rome and is one of the major archaeological sites in northern Italy. Located at the head of the Adriatic it was one of the wealthiest and largest cities during the early Roman empire. A large amount of this site is still being excavated from underground, although this will not limit your exploration.

The Basilica of Aquileia, located in Via Sacra, is world renowned and an important Christian landmark. It overlooks the Piazza del Capitolo and Campanile della Basilica di Aquileia (The Bell Tower of Aquileia). The mosaics on the floor of the Basilica are the largest and best preserved in the Christian world, with the images on the floor depicting not only Christian religious life but also the inclusion of pagan iconography. To witness Aquileia in its entirety will take you about half a day. Enjoy the journey as you walk past ancient pillars, captivating structures and imagine life in ancient Rome.

From traversing Udine, it is clear to see that this large province has a diverse terrain with a unique and inspiring atmosphere, which we have only merely scratched the surface of. Endless locations provide intriguing landscapes, historical buildings, cultural experiences and rustic restaurants, all just waiting to be explored. From the sea to the mountains and everything in-between, discovering Udine will be an opportunity you won’t ever forget.
