A passenger plane bound for New York was forced to make an emergency landing in Rome after being hit by a freak hailstorm following take-off from Milan’s Malpensa airport on Monday.

The plane, operated by Delta Air Lines, suffered damage to its nose as well as its fuselage and wings, according to Italian news reports.

There was nobody injured in the incident, Delta Air Lines said in a statement, specifying that the flight “landed safely” at Rome Fiumicino and “passengers deplaned normally”.

As well as Milan, the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia was battered by extreme weather on Monday and early on Tuesday, including thunderstorms with hailstones as large as tennis balls.
