After the closure in Campo Marzio in April 2019, the collections of the Museo del Mare, inaugurated on Tuesday evening, have found their home in the Old Port’s Warehouse 26.

Founded in 1904 as a Fishing Museum, the museum became a Permanent Maritime Exhibition and acquired in its collection some of the navigation instruments and goods that belonged to the Nautical Academy.

Subsequently, the exhibition took the name of the Maritime Museum and continued to collect models of naval machinery, steamships, lighthouses, maritime signals, photographic collections, prints and nautical charts from various bodies in the maritime sector.

In 1972 the new museum was inaugurated in the building that had been previously used for the Artillery Arsenal and, even before that, by the Lazzaretto, in the area called Campo Marzio.

“The Maritime Museum of Trieste is the city itself. It tells the story of the city and its relationship with the sea and how the city opens itself to the world,” the curator of the museum, Silvia Pinna, told us.

“Here we are looking at Trieste of 200 years ago,” added town councilor for culture, Giorgio Rossi. “Even if there were no piers, there were many a ship arriving for commercial purposes.”

In the new location of Warehouse 26, the historic storage function is recovered and reinterpreted in a way that is functional for accommodating museum deposits, as well as letting the visitors enjoy the museum to the fullest.

Open Tuesday- Sunday, 10 am – 5 pm. More here.
