The Univeristy Of Trieste today announced that applications for the Class of 2026 exceed 5,000—a 22% increase over the historic numbers from last year, when UNITS surpassed 4,000 for the first time, and among the highest number of applications received by any Friuli Venezia Giulia university.
The academic year that has just begun sees the University of Trieste quickly surpass the 5,000 mark for enrollments, including three-year, master’s and single-cycle degrees.
With its 5091 newly enrolled as of 11 October 2023, the university records an overall increase of 22% compared to the same date last year (4165) and 33% more than the 2019/20 data, the year before the outbreak of the pandemic (3827).
These numbers are certainly destined to rise: enrollments for Master’s Degrees are open until 29 February 2024 while the enrolment continues for courses with limited attendance.
The number of registered students from abroad is a sign of excellent international attractiveness: there are 552 (11% of the total), compared to 163 last year and 78 in 2019/20.
First-year students from all the provinces of Friuli Venezia Giulia are increasing and arrivals from the regions that historically prefer UniTS are also increasing: Lombardy, Puglia, Sicily and Emilia Romagna.
The university confirms itself as “female-friendly”: girls represent 60% of the total number of newly enrolled students, with good growth compared to the last three years.
In this category the first-year students are concentrated, those who enter university for the first time: as of 11 October there are a total of 3609, compared to 2940 last year (3156 at the close of registration). In 2019 they were 2709 and 2864 respectively.
The growth of foreign students is impressive: 483 in this academic year, compared to 114 in 2022 and 50 in 2019.
The Most Popular Courses
Excellent success for courses in all disciplinary areas, with a special mention for Chemistry, Economics and Business Management, International Economics and Financial Markets, Industrial Engineering, Medicine and Surgery, Educational Sciences, Primary Education Sciences and Law. Also in high demand are the courses in Interlinguistic communication applied to the legal professions, Specialist translation and conference interpreting, International and diplomatic sciences, Science and technologies for the environment and nature and Biological sciences and techniques, Functional genomics, Data science and artificial intelligence.
“Our university achieved an excellent result in terms of popularity and attractiveness, also internationally, at a time when we are preparing to celebrate 100 years since its foundation – comments the rector Roberto Di Lenarda – these numbers are the result of constant work to improve the spaces, of laboratories, of instrumentation at the service of researchers and students, of constant innovation and expansion of the educational offer, of a continuous investment in people. The teachers went from 653 in 2019 to 744 in August 2023 (with a reduction in the average age in the same period of 4 years), the Technical Administrative staff from 578 to 608 (with a reduction in the average age of approximately 6 years). All with a healthy balance sheet, no debt and increasing resources. The best national and international rankings consistently confirm the highly virtuous path underway.”
