Intense downpours and rough seas across Friuli Venezia Giulia, swamped numerous beach side cities in a catastrophe, which included the Trieste’s Barcola beach. A little over a week after the storm, the Barcola beach remains devastated with the costliest damage the city has seen in recent decades.
The storm, which uprooted the many playgrounds and pedestrian walks by the sea, caused millions in damage, according to an initial estimate by the municipality of Trieste.
Climate scientists say human-induced climate change has led to heavier rainfall during storms like Ciarán, often resulting in more severe damage.
While locals were seen back jogging and strolling by the favorite sea-side front, the future of Barcola remains uncertain as the local news reported “the probability of the beach not being ready for summer 2024”.
