The ‘Shine Bright Like A Diamond, Artist Residencies’ exhibition was inaugurated at the University of Trieste on Tuesday night and can be visited with free admission (weekdays, 9am-6pm) from 15 November 2023 and throughout 2024 in the main building in Piazzale Europa 1.

Ten works by artists from the contemporary scene are installed in the “artist rooms” set up on the different levels of the staircases of the central building, a symbolic place with great visual and communicative impact. A unique initiative on the Italian university scene organized to celebrate the Centenary of UniTS.

The title, a quote from a famous song, is a play on words that deliberately refers to remember and shine, the general catalog of the entire body of artistic works of the University which will be enriched with new creations.

Various techniques were used to create art pieces, in particular installation, but also drawing, sound design, sculpture, photography and painting. The aim of the initiative is to tell, through the artist’s gaze, the richness and complexity of each academic discipline, the uniqueness and versatility of the human being.

The artists in residence had the opportunity to live in close contact with the students, teachers and researchers of the University: each of them was in fact hosted by one of the ten Departments from which they drew inspiration to create an original artistic work.

The artists protagonists of the exhibition are Umberto Chiodi, Antonio Della Marina and Alessandra Zucchi, Giulia Iacolutti, Nicola Martini, Ryts Monet, Ruben Montini, Michele Seffino, Michele Spanghero, Aryan Ozmaei, Alba Zari. Curator Eva Comuzzi, contemporary art historian and teacher, specialized in the productions of young generations of artists.

“The presence of artists in our university has planted creative seeds that I am sure will germinate for a long time both in our departments and in the artistic environments involved – underlined the rector Roberto Di Lenarda – with this exhibition, leaving total creative freedom to the artists, we want to titillate critical ability and stimulate strong reflections on current events and the link between art and science. The visit to this exhibition will be a very attractive stop for those arriving in Trieste and wanting to discover a lively and constantly evolving reality”.

“The #SBLAD exhibition is the product of a process that developed and nourished over the days that the artists spent at UniTS – explained the curator Eva Comuzzi – their personal artistic research was diverted, modified and enriched by the stimuli born from the contamination between the university world and the artists themselves also thanks to the possibility of interacting with scientific machinery and new working methodologies and points of view. The collaboration started will not end here but will develop into new research projects.”

The #SBLAD – Shine Bright Like A Diamond project was created by the University of Trieste – University Museum System (smaTs) with the collaboration of ERPAC – Regional Body for Cultural Heritage and ARDiS – Regional Agency for the right to study Friuli -Venezia Giulia.
