Round-table on the Italo-Slovenian Border organized by the University of Trieste and the University of Primorska in Koper as part of Transform4Europe. Dialogue among scholars, local institutions, and those who crossed the border in their migratory journey.
On Thursday, November 23, at 6 p.m., in the Aula Magna of Androna Baciocchi 4, the round-table “Borders and Migration: (IN)visibility, Yesterday and Today” will take place, organized by the University of Trieste in collaboration with the University of Primorska in Koper, within the activities of the Transform4Europe (T4EU) project.
The meeting will focus on the border of Trieste and the (in)visibility of migrations, seen from both the Italian and Slovenian perspectives: depending on the individuals crossing it and its temporal configuration, the border has been part of the Iron Curtain, a space connecting worlds, a space of daily transit, or a European barrier.
Starting with an analysis of the border and its function in the past and present, the round-table will address the public for a discussion among scholars, local institutions, and testimonies from those who have crossed and experienced the border in their migratory journey.
The event scheduled in Trieste follows a previous meeting organized a month ago in Koper with researchers working on migrations and associations involved in the hospitality and reception of migrants.
“The initiative stems from a cross-border collaboration with the University of Primorska (Koper), which is a project partner in the European alliance network Transform4Europe,” explains Roberta Altin, Anthropology professor at the Department of Humanities of the University of Trieste. “Being a historical crossroads of migrations, Trieste will deepen cross-border dialogue, comparing testimonies of migrations from yesterday and today and then presenting the translated event to the ten international partner universities of T4EU. The European alliance has arisen precisely among universities located in border and multilingual areas, aiming to build a sense of European community through dialogue across different territorial contexts, also involving local institutions and associations.”
Within the project, Italian and Slovenian students from UniTS and Primorska are working on building a border archive, both on the Croatian-Slovenian and Slovenian-Italian borders, with the goal of creating a traveling exhibition.
