The launch of Mein Schiff Relax, the first of the two new-generation dual-fuel cruise ships (Liquid Natural Gas – LNG and Marine Gas Oil – MGO), took place at the Monfalcone shipyard. Fincantieri is constructing these vessels for TUI Cruises, a joint venture between TUI AG and Royal Caribbean Cruises. The ceremony was sponsored by Elena Sperti, an employee of the shipyard.
Weighing approximately 160,000 gross tons each, these ships will form the backbone of TUI Cruises’ future fleet. The order is based on a prototype project developed by Fincantieri, emphasizing the established features of modernity and sustainability that define TUI Cruises, known for having one of the most environmentally advanced fleets. The project’s focal point is energy efficiency, aiming to reduce operational consumption and minimize environmental impact, aligning with the latest regulations. The ships will utilize LNG, currently the cleanest marine fuel widely available on the market. The vessel is future-proof, capable of using low-emission fuels such as bio-LNG or e-LNG, a significant step towards climate-neutral cruising.
Fincantieri is also exploring the possibility of future operation with low-emission biofuels, a crucial step towards climate-neutral cruising. The ships will be equipped with catalytic converters (compliant with Euro 6 standards), a generative turbine utilizing residual heat from diesel generators, and shore power connectivity. These features ensure nearly emission-free operation while in port (approximately 40% of operational time). Additionally, the ships will feature an innovative waste treatment system, even more efficient, capable of transforming organic substances into charcoal through thermal processing.
