Founded in 1997 at the Escuela Reina Sofía in Madrid, the twenty-fifth anniversary of Cuarteto Casals is just around the corner and will be celebrated in the 2022/2023 season.
Highlights of the 2021/2022 season include the opening concert of String Quartet Week at the Boulez Saal in Berlin in May 2022, performances at the String Quartet Biennial in Paris and Lisbon and at the Quartet Weekend in Lugano in January 2022 , as well as a tour of the United States in February 2022. Some concerts with orchestra are also planned: in Barcelona with the Orquestra Simfónica and in Amsterdam with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, to name just a few. Other events of the season have included concerts at the Flagey in Brussels, the Schwetzinger SWR Festspiele or the Auditori in Barcelona. Since winning first prizes at the London and Brahms-Hamburg Competitions, the Cuarteto Casals has been a guest of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Cologne Philharmonie, the Cité de la Musique in Paris, the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
Since September 2020, the quartet has been the artistic director of the Barcelona String Quartet Biennial.
Cuarteto Casals has a substantial discography to its credit with the harmonia mundi label, which includes fifteen CDs to date, with a repertoire ranging from the lesser-known Spanish composers Arriaga and Toldrá to the Viennese classics Mozart, Haydn, Schubert and Brahms, up to to the greats of the twentieth century such as Debussy, Ravel and Zemlinsky. Also of great importance was the live Blue-Ray recording of Schubert’s complete quartets for Neu Records. In May 2020, to coincide with the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, the third box set of a three-volume recording of his Quartets was released on the harmonia mundi label; all three volumes received great critical acclaim.
An award recognized by the prestigious Burletti-Buitoni Trust has allowed the quartet to begin a collection of baroque and classical strings that it uses in combination for works from Purcell to Schubert, honing its ability to distinguish between different musical styles.
Furthermore, the quartet was profoundly influenced in its work by collaborations with living composers, especially György Kurtág; he also performed the world premiere of quartets written by leading Spanish composers, including a new Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra by Francisco Coll, first performed with the Orquesta Nacional de España .
In recognition of its unique contributions to the cultural life of Catalonia and all of Spain, the Cuarteto Casals has been recognized as a cultural ambassador by the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Institut Ramon Lull , as well as by the Ministerio de Cultura . Awards received so far include the Premio Nacional de Música, the Premi Nacional de Cultura de Catalunya and the Premi Ciutat Barcelona.
The quartet performs annually on the extraordinary collection of decorated Stradivarius instruments found in the Royal Palace of Madrid. Cuarteto Casals frequently appears on television and radio throughout Europe and North America and, in addition to holding highly sought-after masterclasses, is quartet-in-residence at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag and the Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya in Barcelona, in which all four musicians reside.
