In a full immersion into the musical legacy of Vienna, a cornerstone of the international musical tradition, the inaugural concert of Cromatismi 3.0, the Chamber Music Season of Trieste, is set to take place on Wednesday, January 17, at 8:30 PM at Teatro Miela. The event is presented by the Chamber Music Trieste Association and curated by the artistic director Fedra Florit.

Running from January 17 to December 15, 2024, at Teatro Miela, the season will feature fifteen grand concerts, forming the 29th chamber music lineup. Renowned artists from around the world will grace the stage in Trieste, performing in the euphonic acoustics prepared by SuonoVivo, with support from members and the CRTrieste Foundation.

The opening concert is headlined by the globally celebrated Alban Berg Ensemble Wien, a fusion of the renowned Hugo Wolf Quartet (Sebastian Gürtler and Régis Bringolf on violins, Su Bin Lee on viola, and Florian Berner on cello) with pianist Ariane Haering, flutist Silvia Careddu, and clarinetist Alexander Neubauer. Marking the first leg of the thematic journey “From Vienna: A Glimpse into the Future,” the program will feature works by Gustav Mahler, interspersed with compositions by Alfred Schnittke and Arnold Schönberg.

The concert opens with Mahler’s Quartet for Piano, Violin, Viola, and Cello in A minor, revealing Mahler’s early mastery and familiarity with the piano repertoire. The program continues with Schnittke’s Piano Quartet, symbolizing an encounter between the 15-year-old Mahler and the 20th-century Russian composer Schnittke. The evening concludes with Schönberg’s Kammersinfonie Op.9 and Mahler’s Adagio from Symphony No.10 in F-sharp minor, his final incomplete work.

The Alban Berg Ensemble Wien promises an emotional and contemporary musical experience, showcasing their distinctive style and commitment to exploring artistic landscapes. Subscriptions and tickets are available at TicketPoint Trieste, with further information at acmtrioditrieste.it. The 2024 Chamber Music Season is supported by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Banca Mediolanum, Suono Vivo – Padova, and Zoogami.

The Vienna-based Alban Berg Foundation has graciously allowed the use of its name as a tangible appreciation for the artistic vision of the ensemble musicians, continuing the innovative legacy of Alban Berg. A century ago, Schönberg, Berg, and Webern founded the Society for Private Musical Performances, creating unconventional concert situations and programs. Today, the Alban Berg Ensemble Wien is annually invited by the renowned Wiener Musikverein to perform in their Brahms Hall and has been organizing their festival, BERGfrühling, since 2018.

In 2022, the ensemble participated in the “Cartagena International Music Festival” in Colombia and inaugurated the concert season of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana in October. The ensemble’s unique instrumental combination, along with their artistic and interpretative vision embracing novelty and innovation, forms the foundation for their projects. The core ensemble of seven musicians, including a string quartet, flute, clarinet, and piano, can vary in size, creating a dynamic concert experience ranging from 2 to 13 musicians, covering repertoire from the Romantic period to the present day.
