Space Spears Exhibit Extended: San Giusto Castle Hosts Rich Lineup of Events in Trieste

Starting from January 13th, a series of special events curated by the Trieste Municipality and Cappella Underground will enhance the Space Spears exhibition at San Giusto Castle. The festivities extend until February 11th, offering a unique blend of science fiction, cinema, and cultural exploration.

The Space Spears exhibition, celebrating 60 years of the Trieste International Science Fiction Film Festival (1963-1982), has been extended until February 11th. Visitors can explore the captivating displays within the Bastione Fiorito of San Giusto Castle during the museum’s regular hours, with no additional cost beyond the standard admission ticket.

The exhibit traces the Festival’s history from its inception, showcasing the evolution of over a century of science fiction cinema. Vintage photographs, original movie posters from Festival classics, a dedicated video gallery featuring cinematic science fiction in all its forms, stage costumes, memorabilia, scientific gadgets, and more await visitors within the halls of the Bastione Fiorito.

This exhibition is a collaborative effort between the Trieste Municipality – Department of Culture and Tourism, and La Cappella Underground, with support from the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the CRTrieste Foundation, the Casali Foundations, and collaboration with Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste.

Saturday, January 13, 9:00 PM The Empire of Light: TaluS4 – Electric Voices of Space Spears Experimental music duo L’Impero della Luce presents a unique sonic experience exploring the electromagnetic landscape of Space Spears. TALUS4, an original composition, will be performed using the electrical currents of the exhibition. Free entry until seats are filled.

Sunday, January 21, 11:00 AM East of the Moon – Exploring Eastern European Sci-Fi As part of the Trieste Film Festival, a guided tour of the Space Spears exhibition with a special focus on Eastern European science fiction curated by the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival. Accredited Trieste Film Festival attendees enjoy reduced admission from January 19 to 27.

Saturday, February 3, 11:00 AM Meeting with Dario Bressanini – Doctor Newtron. Science in Comics Chemist and science communicator Dario Bressanini presents Doctor Newtron. Science in Comics, an exploration of the relationship between science and comics throughout the decades. Free entry until seats are filled.

Saturday, February 3, 12:00 PM – 7:00 PM Laser Brushes and Beyond – Artists in Live Drawing

Sunday, February 4, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM Masters and Apprentices – Live Redraw of Fantasy and Sci-Fi Movie Posters Artists, both seasoned and emerging, redraw posters of films that shaped the fantasy and science fiction genres. The artworks will be exhibited and integrated into the Space Spears display for a week.

Sunday, February 11, 11:00 AM Our Space Spears – Guided Tour On the final day, don’t miss a guided tour of the exhibition led by science journalist Fabio Pagan and film critic Paolo Lughi, offering insights and anecdotes.
