A study on the economic impact of port activities in Trieste and Monfalcone, focusing on employment, production value, and taxation, was unveiled at the Lloyd Tower in Trieste on January 17, 2024. The AIOM – Maritime Operators Entrepreneurial Agency of Trieste conducted the research, which categorized findings into direct activity, primary indirect impact, and secondary indirect impact.
Direct employment within the terminals and labor and service-providing companies totaled 4,058 units (2021 data). Combined with those in the primary indirect sector, the total reached 8,967 units. Employment in the broader logistics market was estimated at 5,810 units, bringing the overall total to 14,777 jobs mobilized by the ports of Trieste and Monfalcone.
In terms of tax revenue, the port economy’s contribution was assessed at over 756 million euros, representing 51.4% of the value added. Of this, 636 million euros were contributed by regional companies, distributed between the State (266 million) and the Region (370 million).
The annual production value stood at 1,909 million euros, including the primary indirect impact. Adding the estimated value of production in the secondary indirect sector, the total reached 4 billion and 285 million euros. AIOM advisor Danilo Stevanato detailed the research, methodological criteria, and consulted quantitative data sources.
Commenting on the data referring to 2021, President of the Eastern Adriatic Sea Port Authority Zeno D’Agostino noted a positive outlook despite pandemic challenges. Logistic services were crucial during this period, maintaining the ports’ connectivity indices and their role as exchange platforms between Europe and the Middle East.
Sergio Bologna, AIOM President, emphasized the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region’s greater benefit from port economic activities than the State. He highlighted the importance of public governance in ensuring resilience during crises, such as the pandemic.
