Renowned actress and author, Isabella Rossellini, graces the stage at Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia with her captivating one-woman show, “Darwin’s Smile,” on January 20 and 21. Fresh off receiving the prestigious “David di Donatello speciale 2023” and earning a spot among Corriere della Sera’s Women of the Year, Rossellini showcases her versatile talents in a performance intertwining her love for acting and ethology.
In this unique production, Rossellini explores the global phenomenon of smiles, drawing inspiration from Charles Darwin’s insights into human and animal emotions. The journey of “Darwin’s Smile” began at the Museo d’Orsay in Paris, where Rossellini was invited to speak during a Darwin-themed exhibition. Her research and reflections on the universality of smiles have now taken center stage, captivating audiences in Italy and continuing on a tour through 2024, including stops in the Canary Islands, Dubai, and France.
The show, directed by Muriel Mayette-Holtz, features Rossellini’s humorous and poignant portrayals of dogs, cats, chickens, peacocks, and Darwin himself. Beyond providing a fascinating lesson in evolution, the performance serves as a masterclass in acting and a bridge between complex scientific theories and entertainment.
Rossellini, a polyglot, adapts her one-woman show to the hosting country, performing in Italian, English, or French. Tickets for “Darwin’s Smile” can be secured at the Politeama Rossetti box office and through Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia’s usual channels.
Don’t miss the free prelude on January 19 at 6:00 PM, featuring Professor Peter Brown of the British School delivering a lecture on Charles Darwin at Sala Bartoli, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. Rossellini’s stellar career, from her early days as a translator and journalist for RAI to becoming an iconic model and acclaimed actress, is a testament to her resilience and artistic prowess, making “Darwin’s Smile” a must-see event.
