Umberto Saba’s famed bookstore, once a literary haven, mourns the loss of its final pillar: Mario Cerne, the torchbearer of the historic establishment and son of Carlo, who served as the poet’s faithful clerk before becoming his business partner.

According to reports from Il Piccolo’s website, Cerne, aged 82, dedicated his life to the bookstore since joining forces with his father back in 1967, until very recently.

A passionate lover of literature and history, Cerne leaves behind a legacy cherished by many. As the community grieves, the shuttered bookstore now awaits a much-needed renovation to preserve its heritage.

Here’s our last interview with Mario.
