Trieste University, partnering with LitMag, a European research project, is spearheading a documentary exhibition with a bold theme: “Testing the Boundaries and Paving the Way to Democratization: East European Literary Magazines 1945–2004.”

From 1945 to 2004, various literary journals played pivotal roles in resisting authoritarian regimes and fostering democratic ideals. This showcase delves into their stories of defiance and advocacy.

The exhibited documents hail from Italy, Lithuania, Hungary, East Germany, Poland, and Slovenia, tracing the narratives of twelve literary journals. Notably, “La battana,” founded in 1964 in Fiume, emerged as a crucial cultural bridge between Italy and Yugoslavia.

The project, engaging eight partners from six European countries, includes Beletrina Academic Press (Slovenia), Slovenia National Museum of Contemporary History, University of Salzburg (Austria), University of Bielsko-Biala (Poland), University of Pécs (Hungary), The Directorates of Vilnius Memorial Museums – Venclovas’ House-Museum (Lithuania), and Science and Research Centre Koper (Slovenia).

In collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Culture and the “Stelio Crise” State Library in Trieste, the exhibition runs until February 15, 2024. Open to all, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM.

The scientific-organizational committee overseeing the exhibition includes Sergia Adamo (Comparative Literature and Literary Theory, UniTS), Vesna Mikolič (Slovenian Language and Literature, UniTS), Francesca Richetti, and Iwan Paolini.
