In a move laden with gratitude and appreciation for their service to the nation, the Trieste city administration has bestowed honorary citizenship upon the Sassari Brigade, one of Italy’s most esteemed military units. The decision aims to honor the deep connection between the city and the Brigade.
“The ties between us are historical, dating back to World War I, and have endured ever since,” asserts General Stefano Messina, commander of the Sassari Brigade.
Renowned for their valor, the unit quickly earned fame, earning the moniker “Red Devils” from the Austrians—a name proudly adopted and translated into Sardinian as “dimonios.” This title now resonates as the Brigade’s anthem, proudly performed at the ceremony’s conclusion.
“It’s a tremendous honor and deeply moving. We’ve had many Triestines among our ranks,” Mayor Roberto Dipiazza reflects.
As part of the ceremony, Trieste also hosts an exhibition from the historical museum of the Sassari Brigade, showcasing documents, memories, and artifacts. The exhibit will remain open on University Street until February 2nd, inviting all to delve into the Brigade’s storied past.
