In a press conference held in the Giunta Room, Municipal Councillor for Territorial Policies, Michele Babuder, has officially inked a memorandum of understanding between the City of Trieste and the volunteer organization ‘Plastic Free’.

Environmental sustainability, territory protection, and waste reduction take center stage in the memorandum of understanding signed on Wednesday. Plastic Free Onlus, a volunteer organization dedicated to combating plastic pollution since 2019, pledges to intensify plastic and non-hazardous waste collection efforts in public areas. They’ll also ramp up environmental awareness activities in schools and universities, disseminate information through physical stands, ecological and tourist walks, as well as geolocated online campaigns via social networks. Moreover, they commit to safeguarding the territory by reporting illegal waste dumping.

“The City Administration has long been spearheading initiatives and projects aimed at raising awareness among citizens for responsible waste management and encouraging waste sorting. In this regard, we are ready to support Plastic Free Onlus in all their activities related to territory cleaning, information dissemination, awareness raising, and reporting,” declared Municipal Councillor for Territorial Policies, Michele Babuder. “All of this is aimed at promoting behaviors inspired by environmental sustainability, territory protection, waste reduction, and fulfilling the Administration’s goal of promoting the circular economy and improving municipal waste sorting.”

The City of Trieste will authorize and support Plastic Free initiatives within the city, ensuring the support of waste management company AcegasApsAmga SpA for the collection of waste bags gathered after each environmental cleanup.

The pact aims to generate benefits for the territory, streamline bureaucratic processes to facilitate volunteer activities, and bring the Municipality closer to citizens engaged in environmental protection. The ultimate goal is to promote policies to combat excessive plastic use and waste dumping.
