In a landmark announcement on Thursday morning (February 22) against the iconic backdrop of the Cathedral of San Giusto, municipal authorities, spearheaded by Territorial Policies Assessor Michele Babuder, unveiled an ambitious vision for the revitalization of the San Giusto Hill area in Trieste.

Joined by esteemed archaeologist Roberto Micheli from the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Assessor Babuder articulated the significance of the multifaceted initiative, emphasizing its cultural, archaeological, and touristic importance.

The comprehensive redevelopment strategy encompasses a spectrum of interventions, chief among them the rejuvenation of green spaces, including the replacement of 23 cypress trees and enhancements to pedestrian pathways. Notably, the commencement of tree felling and subsequent planting endeavors last November marked a pivotal milestone in the project’s timeline, underscoring the municipality’s commitment to sustainable urban development.

Expressions of gratitude were extended to the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape of Friuli Venezia Giulia for their collaborative efforts and expeditious execution of archaeological investigations in the area. Assessor Babuder lauded the adherence to the intervention schedule, with optimistic projections for completion within the next two weeks, barring inclement weather conditions.

Detailing the scope of the redevelopment, municipal authorities outlined efforts to refurbish the San Giusto Hill area, including the restoration of cypress rows along the Roman forum esplanade and tree planting within the Remembrance Park. This holistic approach reflects a dedication to preserving historical and cultural heritage while enhancing public spaces for future generations.

Operational progress, entrusted to Allgreen Trieste Srl and Archeotest Srl of Trieste, has reached a significant milestone, with approximately €90,000 allocated for completed works out of a total budget of €145,434.57. Notable allocations include funds earmarked for tree planting initiatives, highlighting the project’s ecological objectives and commitment to green infrastructure.

Anticipated completion of operational interventions is slated for spring/early summer 2024, heralding a transformative era for the San Giusto Hill area and its surrounding environs.

In addition to enhancements on San Giusto Hill, infrastructure improvements along the Remembrance avenue and Viale Ragazzi del ’99 underscore the broader scope of the redevelopment initiative. Municipal authorities remain steadfast in their commitment to fostering sustainable urban environments while preserving historical landmarks that define Trieste’s unique character.

The comprehensive redevelopment initiative extends beyond San Giusto Hill, encompassing the restoration of adjacent landscapes and streetscapes. Notably, efforts to refurbish tree basins along Rive Tommaso Gulli, Grumula, and Nazario Sauro underscore a comprehensive approach to urban revitalization, weaving together environmental sustainability and historical preservation.

The completion of the tree-lined street of via della Concordia, featuring the planting of Chanticleer pear trees in January 2024, stands as a poignant testament to the municipality’s dedication to sustainable urban planning practices and the preservation of Trieste’s rich cultural heritage.

In conclusion, the unveiling of the San Giusto Hill redevelopment plan marks a pivotal moment in Trieste’s urban evolution, blending historical preservation with contemporary urban design principles. As the project progresses, stakeholders anticipate a revitalized public realm that honors the city’s storied past while embracing the promise of a vibrant future.
