In a morning presentation on February 27th at the esteemed Tergeste Hall, officials unveiled the conclusive findings of the #triestesafedriving initiative, a project aimed at curbing road accidents caused by driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
Led by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and supported by the Department for Anti-Drug Policies, #triestesafedriving has been a collaborative effort involving various stakeholders, including the Asugi Local Police Department and the IRCCS Burlo Garofolo Toxicology Laboratory.
Among the dignitaries present at the press conference were City Security Policy Assessor Caterina de Gavardo, Education and Family Policy Assessor Maurizio De Blasio, and Prefect Pietro Signoriello. Also in attendance were representatives from law enforcement agencies and key collaborators from the local community.
De Gavardo highlighted the project’s emphasis on prevention, particularly targeting youth, underscoring the importance of raising awareness about the dangers of substance abuse while driving.
Signoriello praised the structured approach of #triestesafedriving, noting its endorsement by the Provincial Committee for Public Safety and its collaboration with law enforcement and judicial authorities.
De Blasio expressed gratitude to the Toti Youth Center for its role in educating young people about road safety, emphasizing the project’s potential to save lives in the long term.
Riccardo Addobbati of the Burlo Garofolo Laboratory outlined the project’s scientific components, including innovative screening methods for detecting substance abuse among drivers.
Antonina Contino of ASUGI SC Dependencies emphasized the community-wide efforts to promote road safety, citing partnerships with schools, local authorities, and taxi services.
Commander Walter Milocchi commended the project’s multifaceted approach, which included educational initiatives alongside enforcement measures. He reported encouraging results from road checkpoints, with a minimal number of positive tests for substance abuse among drivers.
