In a bid to revitalize play spaces across the city, maintenance work has commenced in five green areas of the Trieste Municipality. With a total budget of €202,543.51, including €167,979.51 allocated to works, safety measures are at the forefront of the project.

The contract, awarded on March 13, 2024, outlines a 180-day timeline for completion, with an anticipated end date of September 9, 2024. Equipment procurement typically takes 50 days.

The inaugural intervention site is set in the picturesque Via San Michele Garden, nestled on the slopes of San Giusto hill. A historic landmark, the area’s origins trace back to Roman times when it served as a residential hub. Over the years, it transitioned into a public garden until 1790, when it was acquired by Count Giacomo Prandi for his weekend retreat.

Despite subsequent ownership changes, the garden retained its allure, eventually falling under municipal purview in 1925 with the establishment of the Museum of History and Art. Notably, archaeological excavations in 1946-47 unearthed remnants of ancient Roman dwellings, underscoring the site’s rich historical tapestry.

Following post-war reconstruction efforts, the garden was rejuvenated in 1953 by the Selad initiative, providing a verdant oasis for locals and visitors alike. Spanning two levels connected by gracefully arching staircases, the garden features a charming pergola and a dedicated play area for children, complemented by a tranquil fountain gracing the upper tier.

As the city embarks on this ambitious renovation endeavor, the Via San Michele Garden stands as a testament to Trieste’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while fostering inclusive community spaces for generations to come.
