In a momentous morning assembly on April 4th, Trieste’s Councilor for Urban Security, Caterina de Gavardo, alongside Local Police Commander Walter Milocchi, revealed the latest Quarterly Report on the Operations of the Special Intervention Units (NIS). The event, graced by Deputy Police Commissioner Gloria Frizza and Chief Inspector Marco Dorigo, underscored the significance of the NIS in safeguarding Trieste’s urban landscape.
Councilor de Gavardo lauded the NIS’s vital role in combating urban blight, a mission initiated back in 2004 in response to burgeoning concerns over the city’s security. Formal recognition of the unit’s mandate arrived in 2017 through the Minniti Decree, solidifying its status as a linchpin in Trieste’s security apparatus.
Commander Milocchi delineated the breadth of NIS interventions, spanning from countering graffiti vandalism to tackling micro-trafficking. He highlighted the unit’s collaborative ventures with diverse law enforcement entities, particularly its involvement in the “High Impact” public order initiative aimed at bolstering safety in pivotal areas of the city.
The first-quarter report for 2024 showcased a robust enforcement campaign, ranging from curbing urban encampments to cracking down on unauthorized street vending. Noteworthy actions included measures to uphold public decency and stringent enforcement of narcotics laws, resulting in several sanctions for possession and trafficking offenses.
