Amidst a backdrop of escalating global conflicts, the University of Trieste convened for a reflective discourse on peace, commemorating its 50th anniversary. Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, renowned for his diplomatic prowess, graced the occasion, sharing insights garnered from his recent peace mission in Ukraine. This article delves into the significance of the event and the cardinal’s pivotal role in advocating for humanitarian diplomacy.

In a period marred by escalating armed conflicts of ever-increasing violence and devastation, profound questions emerged regarding the feasibility of cultivating international relations geared towards peace. Despite the tumult, diplomatic efforts persisted, even amidst the throes of war, striving to negotiate ceasefires and extend aid and protection to the most vulnerable populations. It was amidst the backdrop of these humanitarian imperatives that avenues for dialogue occasionally emerged, fostering mutual understanding between warring factions.

Reflecting on the 50th anniversary of its inception, the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the University of Trieste convened for a poignant discourse on peace. This assembly provided a platform for engaging with Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, esteemed President of the Italian Episcopal Conference. With a storied past including pivotal involvement in brokering peace accords in Mozambique back in 1992, the Archbishop of Bologna was entrusted by the Pope with a formidable peacekeeping mission aimed at diffusing tensions in Ukraine. His recent travels took him through the corridors of power in Kyiv, Moscow, Washington, and Beijing, a testament to his commitment to global diplomacy.

During this milestone gathering, the Department bestowed upon the cardinal the honor of delivering a commemorative Lectio Magistralis titled “For Peace: The Resources of Humanitarian Diplomacy.” The significance of the occasion was underscored by the choice of venue—the Gorizia Campus, home to esteemed Degree Programs in International and Diplomatic Sciences, and Diplomacy and International Cooperation.
