In a poignant tribute to the renowned artist and peace advocate Diego de Henriquez, the city of Trieste is set to host the “D-Day for Peace” event on Thursday, May 2. Marking the fiftieth anniversary of de Henriquez’s passing, this commemoration promises a day filled with reflection, art, and the enduring pursuit of harmony.

The Civic War Museum for Peace, nestled in the heart of Trieste at Via dei Tominz 4, will serve as the backdrop for this significant occasion. Open to all, the day-long affair will honor de Henriquez’s unwavering commitment to peace, as evidenced by his founding of the eponymous museum.

Kicking off at 11 am, the morning inauguration will feature “Diego’s Words,” an exhibition curated in collaboration with Rai-Regional Headquarters for Friuli Venezia Giulia. Delving into the genesis of de Henriquez’s collection, this showcase offers a glimpse into the artist’s profound vision. Adding to the ambiance, the Quartet of Double Basses, under the direction of Professor Stefano Sciascia from the Conservatory “Giuseppe Tartini,” will serenade attendees with melodic compositions.

As the day progresses, guided tours led by Curator Antonella Cosenzi at 12 pm, 2 pm, and 4 pm will provide deeper insights into de Henriquez’s life and legacy. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the museum’s treasures while reflecting on the enduring relevance of peace in today’s world.

Come evening, the spotlight will shift to the theatrical realm with three performances of “Dancing for Peace” at 5:30 pm, 7 pm, and 8:30 pm. A collaboration between the Stable Theater of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the esteemed company AREAREA, this immersive experience promises to captivate audiences with its emotive storytelling. Against the backdrop of historical cannons, dancers Angelica Margherita, Irene Ferrara, Radu Murarasu, and Giuseppe Zagaria will bring to life the poetry of Wislawa Szymborska, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Bertolt Brecht, and Mariangela Gualtieri, as recited by Maria Grazia Plos.

Admission to all events is free of charge, but reservations are required and can be made by emailing museodehenriquez@comune.trieste.it. Join us in honoring Diego de Henriquez’s enduring legacy and embracing the timeless pursuit of peace on this momentous “D-Day for Peace” in Trieste.
