In a bold move to revitalize Grado’s tourism sector, the Regional government has poured substantial resources into both the beachfront and hinterland areas, focusing on spa facilities and parking infrastructure. The investment has yielded impressive results, with tourist arrivals reaching record highs in 2023, marking a 9.4% surge compared to the previous year. This surge not only underscores Grado’s pivotal role in the tourism landscape of Friuli Venezia Giulia but also highlights its allure to visitors, with over 1.4 million people flocking to its shores.
At the recent inauguration of Grado’s beach season, regional officials, including the Minister for Productive Activities and Tourism, heralded the accomplishments while outlining future strategies. The event, attended by a cadre of dignitaries, showcased Grado’s commitment to sustainable tourism practices and infrastructure development, with a keen eye on reducing seasonality.
During the peak season from May to September, Grado witnessed a commendable 6.1% increase in tourist footfall compared to the previous year, indicating sustained interest beyond traditional summer months. Moreover, the post-pandemic resurgence has seen a notable uptick in international visitors, particularly from Germany and Eastern Europe, with double-digit growth rates recorded across various demographics.
The ambitious plans for Grado’s thermal spas are poised to further elevate its appeal to travelers. With a projected investment of nearly 5 million euros, the revamped spa complex aims to offer an array of modern amenities, including fitness centers, beauty services, and outdoor recreational facilities, by the summer of 2025. This strategic investment underscores the region’s commitment to enhancing visitor experiences while bolstering economic growth.
Meanwhile, ongoing efforts to rejuvenate Grado’s beachfront infrastructure, including restroom facilities and historic structures, are set to commence post-summer, ensuring an enhanced visitor experience for the upcoming seasons.
The recent inauguration ceremonies also showcased Grado’s cultural vibrancy, with the unveiling of the art exhibition “The Beauty of Women” at the spa complex and the formal opening of the DiscoverAquileia Visitor Center at the beachfront. These initiatives, spearheaded by the Aquileia Foundation and Git Grado, underscore the region’s commitment to promoting art and heritage alongside its natural beauty.
As Grado gears up for the summer season, backed by significant investments and a renewed focus on sustainable tourism practices, all signs point to a promising future for this picturesque destination on Italy’s Adriatic coast.
