In normal times, Barcola is the mecca of all residents of Trieste. It is especially true after months of lockdown, when putting your feet in the water was nothing but a dream.

It felt like summer was back in Trieste this weekend as most locals packed up their asciugamani and ventured to Barcola, a stretch of pavement firmly anchored in the hearts of the local population, just 20 minutes away from the city center.

Pineta di Barcola, or Pinewood of Barcola, was full of people enjoying their spritz bianco in the sun speckled shade at the Bar “Hippy” which has reopened its doors to public.

Trieste families were having fun in the sun. Despite the sea being just a little too chilly for a bathe, there were quite a few of swimmers in the water.

Barcola’s kiosks were reopened and served coffee as well as cocktail drinks.

If not for the masks, it would’ve seemed a regular weekend in Trieste.
