In an unusual maritime mishap, a van slipped into the sea at Pier VI in Trieste’s New Freeport. The incident, caused by a malfunction in the vehicle’s parking system, fortunately resulted in no injuries, as the van was unoccupied at the time.

The recovery operation was a testament to the efficiency and coordination of Trieste’s emergency response teams. Personnel from the Trieste Harbor Master’s Office and the Underwater Rescue Team of the Trieste Fire Department responded promptly. They were supported by a crane truck and the SAR Patrol Boat CP881, highlighting the collaborative spirit among local authorities.

Upon arriving at the scene, the Fire Department divers initiated a search operation. They located the van resting on the seabed, approximately 19 meters deep and 50 meters from the pier. The divers then attached the vehicle to a lifting balloon, which, once inflated, brought the van to a semi-floating state.

The Coast Guard Patrol Boat towed the vehicle closer to the quay, where the divers secured it to the crane truck. The truck then hoisted the van out of the water, placing it safely back on the pier.

The rapid response and seamless coordination among the Trieste Harbor Master’s Office, the Fire Department’s Underwater Rescue Team, and the Coast Guard not only ensured the swift recovery of the van but also prevented any potential environmental damage. The operation underscored the robust synergy between these agencies, which has been cultivated over years of joint efforts in rescue missions.

Officials praised the efficiency of the intervention, noting that the incident served as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and collaboration in handling emergencies at the port. The support from the Port System Authority and Trieste Port Services was instrumental in facilitating the recovery.

The incident has raised questions about vehicle safety mechanisms, particularly in industrial and port areas, prompting calls for stricter maintenance protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future. As investigations continue, Trieste’s emergency teams stand ready, their latest success reinforcing the strong network of maritime safety in the region.
