In a poignant display of unity and remembrance, the 36th National Infantry Gathering descended upon the historic city of Trieste from May 24th to May 26th. Against the backdrop of Piazza Unità d’Italia, infantrymen from across Italy convened, marking not only a celebration of camaraderie but also a solemn commemoration of sacrifice and resilience.
The gathering, a testament to the enduring bonds of brotherhood, saw over 12,000 infantrymen from 450 sections rekindle their shared spirit in a series of poignant ceremonies and events.
At the heart of the gathering was the recognition of Trieste’s pivotal role in Italian military history. As the first city to honor the “Unknown Soldier” with honorary citizenship, Trieste provided a fitting stage for the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the 1st Infantry Regiment, the Savoia Regiment, and the 70th anniversary of Trieste’s reunification with Italy.
The opening day commenced with the arrival of the Gathering’s Tricolor Flag, ceremoniously escorted by sailors from the National Association of Italian Sailors, heralding a weekend of solemn tributes and historic reflections.
Among the notable events was the wreath-laying ceremony at the Monument to the Fallen of Trieste, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in service to the nation. Attendees also paid homage at significant historical sites, including the Third Army Altar on San Giusto Hill and the tomb of the Duke of Aosta, commander of the Third Army.
Reflecting on the solemnity of the occasion, Colonel Massimiliano Spucches presented the 66th Aeromobile Infantry Regiment “Trieste” to local authorities, underscoring the enduring legacy of the infantry in Italy’s military heritage.
Day two of the gathering continued the theme of remembrance, with wreath-laying ceremonies at the National Monument of the Basovizza Foiba and the Risiera di San Sabba, poignant symbols of Italy’s wartime sacrifices. A conference on the Cold War-era defense strategies on the eastern border provided historical context to the region’s military significance.
The gathering culminated in a grand parade through the streets of Trieste, as infantrymen proudly marched alongside the city’s iconic landmarks, reaffirming their commitment to honor and duty.
As the sun set on Piazza Unità d’Italia, the closing ceremony brought a poignant conclusion to the 36th National Infantry Gathering. With the lowering of the flag, attendees bid farewell to Trieste, carrying with them the cherished memories of camaraderie and sacrifice that defined this historic reunion.
In the heart of Trieste, amidst the echoes of history, the spirit of the infantrymen lives on, a testament to the enduring legacy of Italy’s military heritage.
