In a significant expansion of its operations in Italy, British American Tobacco (BAT) unveiled a new Integrated Logistics Hub in Trieste on Thursday, underscoring its strategic commitment to the region. The inauguration comes less than a year after the ceremonial opening of its manufacturing facility and eighteen months since the commencement of its first production line.

The 12,500-square-meter hub, built with an investment of 6 million euros in partnership with Interporto, marks a pivotal development for BAT. The facility, constructed by converting an existing warehouse, is designed to seamlessly integrate with the company’s production plant, effectively doubling the operational space available to BAT in the FreeEste industrial area. This expansion positions Trieste as the primary distribution point for BAT’s products in Italy.

“The Integrated Logistics Hub is a strategic milestone in BAT’s commitment to Italy and Trieste,” said Andrea Di Paolo, President of BAT Trieste. “This extensive warehouse will streamline the storage and management of finished products and raw materials for both BAT Trieste and BAT Italy, adhering to the highest standards of efficiency and sustainability.”

Trieste has emerged as a central node for BAT’s Italian operations. Following the establishment of its production facility, BAT has now designated the city for its logistics operations, facilitating the transit of products destined for both domestic and international markets. This strategic consolidation is expected to significantly shorten the distribution chain, reducing the company’s carbon footprint and enhancing overall system efficiency.

The project’s swift completion in just eight months is a testament to the effective collaboration between BAT and several local and international partners. Interporto spearheaded the construction, engaging local firms Rosso and Pederzani for building works, while BAT partnered with global leaders in IT and security, such as Axians and Sayword, for technological and security solutions. CARR SERVICE played a crucial role in integrating advanced technology and automation processes.

Paolo Privileggio, President and CEO of Interporto di Trieste, highlighted the importance of this collaboration. “This project validates our business model, which combines logistical services with industrial production within the Free Port of Trieste. The new initiative strengthens the synergy between Interporto di Trieste and BAT, paving the way for additional value creation in the region.”

As BAT continues to bolster its presence in Trieste, the new logistics hub is poised to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability, reinforcing the city’s role as a critical hub in the company’s European network.
