This September, Trieste will transform into a sprawling stage for the second edition of the “Festival di Trieste – Il Faro della Musica.” The festival, curated by the Società dei Concerti Trieste, promises an immersive experience with symphonic concerts, chamber music, and dance performances set against the city’s most enchanting backdrops. From historic venues to open squares and even a floating platform at sea, the festival will feature internationally renowned artists, enriching the cultural tapestry of this storied city.
A Symphony on the Sea
The festival kicks off with a preview on September 5, featuring LaFil Filarmonica di Milano performing in Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia. This grand square will also house the Festival Music Center, a hub for concerts, artist meet-and-greets, and ticket information.
Among the luminaries gracing the festival are pianist Nikolai Lugansky, cellist Giovanni Sollima, and clarinetist Andreas Ottensamer. Over twenty venues, including Teatro Lirico G. Verdi, Castello di Miramare, and Teatro Politeama Il Rossetti, will host a rich tapestry of performances, blending Renaissance to contemporary music.
A Citywide Celebration
“Trieste, with its deep cultural roots and stunning venues, offers a unique canvas for this festival,” says Artistic Director Marco Seco. “We aim to create a multifaceted experience, inviting the audience to traverse the city and discover its beauty through music and dance.”
The program is expansive and diverse, featuring twenty-nine events across over twenty locations. A highlight is a free concert by Giovanni Sollima on a floating platform in front of Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia on September 14, showcasing his virtuosity with a program dedicated to Bach.
Dance Takes Center Stage
This year, the festival introduces “Danze e Contraddanze,” a series dedicated to the art of dance. The main production, a world premiere by choreographer Andrea Bolognino and pianist Gabriele Strata, will be held at Teatro Politeama Il Rossetti on September 10. Other dance events include performances by the Sonoro Quartet and dancer Giacomo Calabrese, and a Flamenco-inspired evening with pianist Axel Trolese and dancer Marta Roverato.
Honoring Musical Legacies
In a concert at Castello di Miramare on September 12, the Goldberg Quartet will commemorate the anniversaries of Puccini’s death and Schönberg’s birth, presenting works by both composers.
Music in Every Corner
“Festival in Città” will bring music to public spaces and private homes on September 8 and 11. Local bands will animate city squares, while intimate Hausmusik sessions will take place in private residences and significant city venues like the RAI headquarters and Caffè San Marco.
The festival also includes family workshops at Casa della Musica and live shows combining music, art, and storytelling for children.
A Tradition of Excellence
“The Festival di Trieste embodies our tradition of musical excellence,” says Società dei Concerti President Piero Lugnani. “With support from the Ministry of Culture, Generali’s Valore Cultura project, and numerous private sponsors, we aim to position Trieste on the international cultural map.”
