In a gesture of solidarity amidst ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the city of Trieste has extended a helping hand to Odessa through its “Operation ToM. Trieste embraces Mycolaiv” initiative. This morning, officials gathered at the municipal palace’s Blue Salon to announce the delivery of critical medical supplies, including a second ambulance, six defibrillators, and three monitors for physiological monitoring.
Led by Everest Bertoli, Councilor for Financial Policies, and supported by regional health authorities and emergency services, the initiative underscores Trieste’s commitment to aiding war-torn regions. The effort marks a continuation of Trieste’s humanitarian support to Ukraine since the onset of the Russian invasion, aimed at providing essential aid to affected populations.
Antonio Poggiana, General Director of ASUGI, expressed gratitude for Trieste’s inclusive approach, noting the critical need for emergency resources in conflict zones. “Our collaboration with Trieste reflects a shared commitment to alleviating the suffering caused by war,” remarked Poggiana.
Beatrice Micovilovich, coordinator of Operation ToM, highlighted the initiative’s evolution since its inception, emphasizing ongoing efforts to deliver essential supplies to Ukraine. “Today’s announcement represents our sixth humanitarian mission to Ukraine, supported by ASUGI, ensuring continuity in our relief efforts,” Micovilovich affirmed.
The donation, facilitated through logistical expertise from Nina Monastyretska of Alfa Spedizioni, reflects Trieste’s strategic coordination in delivering aid safely and efficiently to Odessa. This latest shipment follows previous donations, including an ambulance and medical equipment, demonstrating Trieste’s sustained commitment to supporting Ukrainian communities amidst adversity.
Riccardo Riccardi, Regional Councilor for Health, Social Policies, and Civil Protection, underscored the broader regional efforts to assist Ukraine. “This donation aligns with our comprehensive strategy, from establishing refugee camps to logistical hubs for medical supplies,” Riccardi stated, outlining Friuli Venezia Giulia’s multifaceted support for Ukraine during the ongoing crisis.
Alberto Peratoner, Head of 118 emergency services, emphasized the practical impact of the donation, highlighting its potential to save lives in a region grappling with acute medical shortages. “These resources, including advanced medical equipment, are invaluable in providing critical care amid challenging conditions,” Peratoner affirmed.
Since the conflict’s outset, Trieste has maintained a proactive stance through a dedicated task force, mobilizing resources and support under the leadership of Fabio Lorenzut, General Director. This unified effort has encompassed multiple humanitarian missions, reinforcing Trieste’s role as a beacon of solidarity in the face of humanitarian crises.
