The final phase of an evacuation operation took place in Trieste today, where migrants who had been residing in a silo were escorted out under the supervision of local authorities, healthcare professionals, and international observers.
Remaining in the silo are only bags of garbage, abandoned clothing, scraps of meals, and a few tents. Most of the tents had been dismantled and removed by the migrants themselves, who had lived there for an extended period.
The deadline for the evacuation was set by an ordinance from Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, posted on the fence that once served as the entrance to the building.
Throughout the day, migrants were guided out of the structure and taken to tents set up behind the silo by the Civil Protection. Here, doctors and Health Agency workers conducted routine medical checks.
Approximately one hundred migrants were found inside the structure, aware of the impending eviction but hoping for better accommodations. An additional fifteen individuals, who had been sleeping in other makeshift shelters across the city, gathered near the silo seeking assistance. These migrants are now scheduled to be relocated outside the region.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) supervised the operation and provided multilingual assistance. The UNHCR is also supplying twelve housing modules, which will be established in Campo Sacro, a location on the Trieste Karst several kilometers from the city center. These modules are intended to accommodate future migrants arriving in Trieste who cannot find space in existing facilities.
