The integration of artificial intelligence into the healthcare sector represents both a technological and procedural shift. This evolution, while presenting significant opportunities, also comes with complexities and requires robust institutional support. In this context, Friuli Venezia Giulia, a small and advanced region known for its adaptability, is positioning itself at the forefront.

Governor Massimiliano Fedriga, alongside Regional Health Councillor Riccardo Riccardi, introduced the Health Laboratory 20/30 on artificial intelligence. The event, scheduled for June 27 and 28 at Villa Manin, is set to be a significant milestone in the region’s healthcare landscape.

“This initiative has attracted the participation of 110 companies, 700 health professionals, and over 1,100 attendees,” Riccardi announced. Among the participants are notable organizations such as AstraZeneca and Google, highlighting the event’s importance.

“The emergence of artificial intelligence underscores that the issue extends beyond the volume of resources allocated to the healthcare system,” Fedriga stated. “It’s about how these resources are utilized and the innovative processes that are implemented.” The two-day conference will also host the Health Commission of the Conference of Regions, affirming the laboratory’s national relevance.

Riccardi detailed the themes to be discussed, including the treatment and monitoring of diseases, public health surveillance, and the overall growth of the healthcare system. He emphasized the ethical considerations, noting, “The machine supports the human but does not replace them.” One critical area for further exploration is balancing data utilization with privacy protection.

“The application of artificial intelligence in healthcare marks a shift that will prove irreversible, bringing efficiency gains that benefit both patients and providers,” Fedriga observed. He illustrated this with an example: “A virtual general practitioner can conduct an initial screening of a patient. This preliminary assessment, reviewed by a professional, provides a solid foundation for deciding on a prescription. Such a system shortens waiting times, optimizes expertise, and enhances the overall response to citizens.”
