The seventeenth edition of the Erev/Layla Festival of Jewish Music and Culture will draw to a close tomorrow, Thursday, June 27. Organized by the Musica Libera Association, in collaboration with the Museum of the Jewish Community of Trieste, the Jewish Community of Trieste, and the Viktor Ullmann Festival, this year’s festival has presented a series of enriching events, supported by the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
The festival, known for its culturally advanced program, has welcomed a multitude of artists, both local and international, dedicated to Jewish music and culture. This year’s edition featured four free concerts, held on the terrace of the Jewish Museum of Trieste, each beginning at 9:00 PM.
“A culturally advanced festival,” remarked Artistic Director Davide Casali, “with music that spans the entire Jewish world, offering rare performances. The festival showcases young musicians from across Europe, performing boundless music that transports us back to the vibrant Jewish culture of the past, while also reflecting its enduring presence today.”
Tomorrow’s closing event will highlight a concert by the young pianists from Pierpaolo Levi’s school, in collaboration with the Nives Caetani Buzzai Association. Pierpaolo Levi, a longstanding collaborator with the Viktor Ullmann Festival, has been instrumental in guiding his students to study and perform works by Jewish composers who were labeled as “degenerate” during the Nazi regime.
The students will present a poignant collection of music composed by those who endured persecution during World War II. “Having such young students engage with this repertoire is profoundly important and a point of pride for the festival,” Casali emphasized.
The concert, set to begin at 9:00 PM, offers free admission on a first-come, first-served basis. In the event of inclement weather, the performance will move to an indoor venue.
