The University of Trieste (UniTS) concluded its MOVIEUNITS film series centenary celebrations last night with the grand finale, held on the iconic steps of Piazzale Europa. The event, themed “The Future of Knowledge,” drew a significant crowd, culminating in an open-air screening of the acclaimed film The Theory of Everything.

Directed by James Marsh, the 2014 film chronicles the life of renowned physicist Stephen Hawking, portrayed by Eddie Redmayne in an Oscar-winning performance. The evening commenced with an insightful presentation by the Department of Physics, featuring commentary from Professor Francesco Longo, who eloquently highlighted Hawking’s contributions to modern science.

Since its inception, MOVIEUNITS has engaged over 1,500 spectators through its diverse programming. The series featured eleven evenings of curated films, shown at various cultural hubs around Trieste, including the Auditorium of the Revoltella Museum, Teatro Miela, Teatrino Basaglia, and the Public Garden.

Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of UniTS, the film selection addressed pressing contemporary issues such as the climate crisis, artificial intelligence, robotics, the evolving labor market, memory and archives, cloning, genetic engineering, financial paradoxes, migration, space exploration, and the hopes and anxieties of younger generations in the Anthropocene era.

MOVIEUNITS was realized through the collaborative efforts of UniTS departments and the Casa del Cinema di Trieste association, with generous support from the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Municipality of Trieste, alongside the partnership of ERPAC FVG.

As the University of Trieste embarks on its second century, the success of the MOVIEUNITS series underscores its commitment to fostering intellectual engagement and cultural dialogue within the community.
