Under the softening light of a late June evening, the lush gardens of Miramare Castle will play host to a poignant convergence of music, theater, and natural beauty. The series, “Il Rossetti a Miramare,” a collaboration between the Historical Museum and the Park of Miramare Castle and the Rossetti theater, promises a blend of cultural splendor, starting tonight with a compelling performance that threads together the evocative strains of Romanticism.
Tonight’s opening, marked as “Concert at Sunset,” features the Orchestra of the Giuseppe Verdi Lyric Theater Foundation of Trieste under the baton of Maestro Alvise Casellati. A frequent guest conductor at prestigious venues such as the Fenice in Venice and the Arena of Verona, Casellati brings his considerable expertise to this enchanting setting. Notably active in New York, where he helms an annual recital dedicated to Italian opera in Central Park, his international acclaim is well-earned.
The evening will also spotlight the dramatic talents of Sergio Rubini, a luminary of Italian cinema, who will breathe life into the words of Werther, the tragic hero of Goethe’s seminal Romantic novel. Rubini’s narration accompanies Gaetano Pugnani’s 18th-century melodrama, “Werther,” for narrating voice and orchestra. Pugnani, though often overlooked in modern repertoires, offers a richly classical style that bridges Italian tradition with Viennese and German influences. The performance promises to capture the audience with its themes of universal, timeless love against the backdrop of Miramare’s breathtaking vistas.
Following this evocative evening, the series continues with a “Concert at Dawn” on Sunday, June 30, at precisely 5:19 AM. Set against the emerging light of dawn in the Piazzale of Miramare Castle, this concert will present two of Mozart’s celebrated quintets. Performed by a chamber ensemble formed within the Verdi Theatre’s orchestra, the program includes the Quintet in E-flat major K. 407 for horn and strings and the Quintet in A major K. 581 for clarinet and strings.
These pieces, composed for Mozart’s virtuoso friends Ignatz Leitgeb and Antonio Stadler, respectively, showcase the lightness and depth characteristic of Mozart’s work. Despite being written during a financially troubled period for Mozart, the music remains vibrant and uplifting, offering a perfect auditory accompaniment to the breaking dawn.
Program:
- W. A. Mozart: Quintet in E-flat major K. 407 for horn and strings
- W. A. Mozart: Quintet in A major K. 581 for clarinet and strings “Stadler”
Performers:
- Stefano Furini, Valentino Dentesani (Violins)
- David Briatore, Elisabetta Chiappo (Violas)
- Simona Slokar (Cello)
- Chiara Bosco (Horn)
- Marco Masini (Clarinet)
