The University of Trieste announced a significant expansion of its academic offerings on Monday, introducing two new master’s degree programs set to commence in the 2024/2025 academic year. These programs, delivered entirely in English, aim to address pressing global challenges through a distinctly international and professional lens.
Starting this fall, the new degrees, Engineering for the Energy Transition and European Policies for Digital, Ecological, and Social Transitions, will equip students with the skills needed to navigate and lead in an increasingly complex world marked by rapid digital, ecological, social, and energy transformations.
“Both programs are designed to address the urgent need for new models and professions to manage the transitions we are facing,” said Roberto Di Lenarda, the university’s rector. “These programs are multidisciplinary by nature, integrating legal and political education to prepare students for the multifaceted challenges of ecological, energy, and digital transitions. They offer innovative specializations that are in high demand in today’s job market.”
Engineering for the Energy Transition
The Engineering for the Energy Transition program stands out with its unique structure, offering dual pathways: Sustainable Building Design and Technology and Sustainable Industrial Systems. This program aims to provide comprehensive training in the energy transition sector, covering both the building and industrial fields.
Students will gain expertise in designing systems that are sustainable from economic, environmental, and social perspectives. They will learn to select appropriate technologies, materials, energy sources, and carriers, and will be equipped to integrate building and energy systems with electrical grids, storage systems, and sustainable mobility solutions.
Graduates will find opportunities across various sectors, including freelance design work, energy efficiency consulting, renewable energy production, and public and private sector roles in energy system management. The program is bolstered by the establishment of ELISA, a dedicated lab supporting a multidisciplinary team of engineers, chemists, computer scientists, economists, and social scientists. ELISA complements existing labs focused on photovoltaics and smart grids, enhancing the university’s capacity as a leading research entity in renewable energy and sustainable mobility.
To enroll, students must have a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering or Civil and Environmental Engineering, or equivalent qualifications with specific credits in mathematics, physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, energy engineering, and civil engineering or architecture. A minimum degree score of 95/110 is required, or candidates must undergo an interview. Proficiency in English at a B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference is also mandatory.
European Policies for Digital, Ecological, and Social Transitions
Launching in September, the European Policies for Digital, Ecological, and Social Transitions program aims to prepare students for leadership roles in the governance of digital, ecological, and social changes. Future public administration officials, project managers, and consultants will acquire advanced skills in analyzing, managing, and evaluating European policies, programs, and projects.
The curriculum includes in-depth studies of political, social, and legal mechanisms to govern sustainability, digital impacts, and social cohesion. Graduates will be well-equipped to leverage European Union tools and resources to manage these transitions effectively.
Admission requirements for this program include a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations, Administration and Organization Sciences, Economic Sciences, or Social Sciences for Cooperation, Development, and Peace. Alternatively, candidates must have accumulated 24 ECTS in law, economics, statistics, political science, and sociology. Proficiency in English at a B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference is also required.
