Gondolas are back in service on Venetian canals, after more than two months, with the recent lifting of Italy’s lockdown restrictions.

The main difference now is that the passengers are locals and not tourists, as the lagoon city waits for the return of international tourism which is scheduled to make a tentative come-back in June.

That hasn’t stopped the gondoliers from dressing up in their trademark blue-and-white striped shirts, however now they are also wearing masks and gloves, reports local media.

During the lockdown, Venice’s canals became clear, due to the absence of boat traffic churning up sediment, and the city centre welcomed a variety of marine wildlife from jellyfish to octopus.

Here are the best ways to get from Trieste to Venice when the borders between regions will reopen on June 3d.
