As the vintage Centoporte trains continue their regional tours, promoting the charm of slow tourism, five special journeys are set to delight travelers in July. Following the sold-out success of spring trips, the program offers a nostalgic rail experience across the picturesque landscapes of Friuli Venezia Giulia, at a promotional fixed fare.

The historic trains, restored to their 1930s splendor, are the centerpiece of this initiative, aiming to blend cultural discovery with leisurely travel. Passengers can expect wooden interiors, vintage luggage racks, and the rhythmic chug of steam or diesel locomotives, reminiscent of a bygone era.

The first event of the month, the Train of Blades and Griffins, departs from Pordenone on July 6, making a stop in Maniago to celebrate blacksmithing and cutlery arts. Travelers will journey onwards to Cornino, exploring the Cornino Lake Nature Reserve, known for its majestic griffins. The excursion includes complimentary access to local museums and tasting sessions featuring regional delicacies.

The following day, the Folkest Train connects Trieste to San Daniele del Friuli, aligning with the Folkest International Folk Music Festival. This musical voyage offers a global cultural experience, bringing passengers closer to the diverse rhythms and traditions celebrated at the festival.

On July 14, the Train to Discover Pinzano al Tagliamento and Val d’Arzino embarks from Sacile, leading passengers to a variety of outdoor activities upon arrival. Options range from river excursions to e-bike tours and guided walks through historical landmarks, providing a comprehensive exploration of the area’s natural and cultural heritage.

The UNESCO Cities Train sets off on July 21, from Pordenone to the historic towns of Palmanova and Aquileia. Recognized for their cultural significance and historical wealth, these destinations offer a deep dive into the rich legacy that earned them UNESCO World Heritage status.

Concluding the month on July 28, the Train of Castles and Mosaics travels from Sacile to Spilimbergo. This enchanting route includes a visit to the Church of San Pietro in Travesio, adorned with works by Pilacorte and frescoes by Giovanni Antonio de Sacchis. The journey culminates in Spilimbergo, renowned as the “City of Mosaics,” showcasing its intricate artistic heritage.

Tickets, priced accessibly regardless of the route length, are available via Trenitalia’s various channels, with sales typically opening two weeks prior to the travel date. Notably, the initiative includes complimentary on-ground programs such as guided tours and tastings, further enriching the travel experience.

Amidst the resurgence of undertourism — a trend favoring lesser-known locales and leisurely travel experiences — these historic train journeys have struck a chord. Last year’s season saw overwhelming demand and high satisfaction rates, underscoring the appeal of sustainable tourism.

This project is a testament to the collaborative efforts between the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and Fondazione FS, supported by PromoTurismoFVG. It aims to promote regional discovery while encouraging environmentally friendly travel practices.

Travelers are advised that, while these vintage trains offer a unique historical experience, they might lack modern amenities like central heating and air conditioning. However, the charm of these journeys lies in their authenticity, providing an opportunity to traverse scenic landscapes at a relaxed pace, reminiscent of a more tranquil era of travel.
