On Wednesday, the 3rd of July, the city of Trieste will witness a vibrant celebration of young talent and cinematic artistry as the sixth day of the ShorTS International Film Festival unfolds. The day’s events promise a rich tapestry of screenings, discussions, and immersive experiences, offering something for cinephiles of all ages.

The day commences at 4:30 PM at the historic Teatro Miela with a special focus on youth. The “Teens” block of the Shorter Kids’n’Teens section will be presented, a highlight within the festival aimed at introducing the languages and techniques of short films to middle school students from Trieste and Gorizia. This segment features a curated selection of ten short films, showcasing diverse stories and innovative filmmaking approaches.

Among the films to be screened is “Akufeni,” a graduation short from the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (CSC), where a band of spirited metalheads forsake bocce for the thunderous beats of double bass drums. “Impossible Maladies” by Alice and Stefano Tambellini offers a whimsical and macabre narrative about a doctor’s absurdly naive methods for curing bizarre ailments, evoking the finest traditions of horror. Another CSC graduation short, “Archang3l,” envisions a psychedelic future teeming with demons, saved (perhaps) by humans, reminiscent of Roland Topor’s “Fantastic Planet.” Additionally, “L’ora buca,” directed by Nikola Brunelli in collaboration with the film school for boys and girls of Ancona, captures the youthful desire to break the monotony of school life, while “Falling a Park,” another CSC gem, rounds out the selection.

Following the “Teens” block, the out-of-competition short “Fiori d’acanto” by Alessandra Pescetta will be screened, offering a poignant cinematic interlude.

At 5:00 PM, the Sala Xenia will host the ShorTS Immersive section, a competitive showcase of seven works—three in 6DoF and four in Cinematic VR. Attendees, equipped with special headsets, will experience storytelling in a novel, spatially dynamic format. Reservations for this event can be made at maremetraggio.com.

The evening’s highlight, scheduled for 7:00 PM at Teatro Miela, is the presentation of the Premio Interprete del Presente to Isabella Ragonese. Ragonese, an actress celebrated for her magnetic presence and versatile talent, has garnered five Nastri d’Argento nominations and four David di Donatello nominations across just 26 films. She recently received the Nastro d’Argento Grandi Serie TV for her complex and tormented role in Giuseppe Gagliardi’s prison noir, “Il re.” The award ceremony will be followed by a masterclass led by Ragonese, providing attendees with insights into her acclaimed career and acting craft.

The day concludes at 9:15 PM in the Public Garden, where the fourth block of the Maremetraggio section’s short films will be screened, offering festival-goers a final opportunity to engage with the dynamic world of short cinema under the evening sky.

As the ShorTS International Film Festival continues, it remains a beacon for emerging filmmakers and a testament to the enduring power of short films in capturing the imagination of audiences young and old.
