From July 22 to 28, the historic city of Trieste will come alive with a series of cultural events that promise to cater to a wide range of tastes. The annual Trieste Estate festival, organized by the Municipality of Trieste, will feature a mix of tribute nights, prestigious jazz concerts, and performances in picturesque locations across the city.
One of the highlights of this year’s festival will be tribute evenings dedicated to the late composer Ezio Bosso and the beloved singer-songwriter Lucio Dalla. These events will celebrate their contributions to music with performances that highlight their most memorable works.
Musical Extravaganza in Piazza Verdi
Jazz enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy with the “Triestelovesjazz” series. The festival will feature internationally acclaimed artists, including the Rachel Z Trio with Omar Hakim and Jonathan Toscano, who will take the stage in Piazza Verdi on July 22. Rachel Z, known for her collaborations with Peter Gabriel and Wayne Shorter, and Hakim, famed for his work with Weather Report and Miles Davis, promise to deliver an unforgettable performance.
Adam Holzman and The Big Bang Theory will bring their New York jazz sound to the same venue on July 24. The week will also see performances by Klaus Gesing and Ana Pilat, adding to the festival’s diverse musical offerings.
Tributes and Themed Nights at Historic Venues
San Giusto Castle, a landmark of Trieste, will host “La Sera dei Miracoli” on July 24, a tribute to Lucio Dalla that has garnered praise as one of the most authoritative tributes to the Italian artist. On July 25, the castle will be the site of the festival’s Trash Nite, featuring Cristina D’Avena, a nostalgic favorite known for her performances of beloved TV theme songs.
In a blend of rock and symphony, “Symphonika on the Rock” will take the stage at the castle on July 27, offering symphonic renditions of hits from the Rolling Stones, Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC, and Queen.
Theater and Cinema Offerings
The festival’s theater program includes the return of the “Festil, summer festival of the coast,” with “A te e famiglia,” a personal exploration of juvenile justice in Sicily. Ariella Reggio will lend her voice to “Anita batte a macchina,” a theatrical tribute to Anita Pittoni, performed in the garden of the Sartorio Museum on July 26.
Cinema lovers can enjoy open-air screenings in the Public Garden. Highlights include “The Northman,” an epic Viking revenge saga, and “A Haunting in Venice,” a supernatural thriller starring Kenneth Branagh, based on Agatha Christie’s novel.
Outreach to Local Neighborhoods
The “Trieste Estate Fuoricentro” series will bring quality performances to various neighborhoods, starting with Opicina on July 27. The Slovene Cultural Society will host a double musical event featuring “Il CarrozzONE live” and the ska band “The Authentics.” On July 28, the First District will offer a dawn walk from Contovello to Miramare, a photo safari in the afternoon, and two evening concerts: “Una banda di storie” by the Santa Barbara Philharmonic and “Remi Tour” by Crampi Elisi.
