A sudden and intense storm struck the port of Trieste on Thusday, leading to significant disruptions and a major response from the Coast Guard and local nautical services.
The storm brought wind gusts reaching up to 80 km/h (50 mph), causing the moorings of three vessels to break free. The affected ships included the Turkish-flagged ferry Ulusoy-14, which was docked at Pier VI, the Portuguese-flagged container ship K-Stream, and the Singapore-flagged Maersk Hidalgo, both stationed at Pier VII.
Despite prior warnings relayed via radio to ships and nautical services about the approaching storm, the strong winds overwhelmed the moorings. The crew of the K-Stream managed to reinforce their moorings and remain at the dock without external assistance. The Ulusoy-14 successfully started its engines and dropped anchor with the aid of a pilot. The situation was more critical for the Maersk Hidalgo, which required the intervention of tugs, moorers, and pilots to safely return it to its berth.
In addition to managing the ships, the Coast Guard patrol boat CP881 cleared the Audace pier, which had become dangerously crowded with people despite the high waves and strong winds.
A further complication arose when a fishing boat was reported missing at sea. The Coast Guard swiftly launched a search and rescue operation. Fortunately, the boat eventually returned to port on its own, escorted by the CP881.
The prompt and coordinated response from both naval and land-based Coast Guard personnel, along with local nautical services, ensured that all emergency situations were managed safely.
Authorities have issued a high alert for the rest of the day and the following days, with weather warnings in effect until August 2. The Coast Guard advises all mariners and recreational boaters to consult weather forecasts and heed alerts from Civil Protection to avoid potentially dangerous situations.
