As Ferragosto approaches, Trieste is set to experience one of the most intense heatwaves of the summer. The city, along with 13 other Italian locations, is under a red alert for extreme temperatures. With forecasts predicting record-breaking heat, combined with humidity levels exceeding 60% along the coast and over 50% in inland areas, Trieste is bracing for a severe weather event.

Local authorities and health officials are urging residents to prepare for the extreme conditions and follow critical safety guidelines to protect themselves and their loved ones during this sweltering period.

Health Officials Issue Urgent Guidelines

In response to the extreme conditions, family doctors have released a ten-point guide to help individuals navigate the intense heat safely. These guidelines are designed to protect both individuals and their loved ones from the adverse effects of heat. Here’s a summary of the essential advice:

Check on the Vulnerable: Regularly check on elderly or fragile neighbors, family members, or friends who live alone.

Stay Hydrated: Drink 1.5-2 liters of water daily, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and sugary or carbonated drinks.

Avoid Peak Heat: Refrain from outdoor activities and exercise during the hottest parts of the day, typically from 11 AM to 5 PM.

Wear Appropriate Clothing: Choose light, light-colored clothing made of natural fibers like cotton and linen, which allow for better skin ventilation.

Seek Cool Spaces: Stay in cool, well-ventilated areas as much as possible. Use fans or air conditioning, but avoid drastic temperature differences from the outside.

Opt for Light Meals: Eat light, fruit- and vegetable-rich meals, steering clear of heavy and heavily seasoned foods.

Cool Down: Take cool showers or baths to lower your body temperature. Alternatively, apply damp cloths to your wrists, forehead, and neck.

Monitor Your Health: Watch for signs of dehydration or heatstroke—such as headaches, dizziness, weakness, nausea, or muscle cramps. Seek medical help if symptoms arise.

Protect Against the Sun: Wear wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen when outdoors.

Plan Your Day: Schedule activities to avoid the hottest hours and consider early mornings or evenings for outdoor plans.
