Starting September 15, residents and travelers in Gorizia, a small city in Italy’s Friuli Venezia Giulia region, will benefit from a new high-speed rail connection. Trenitalia, Italy’s national railway company, has announced that a Frecciarossa train will provide direct service from Gorizia to several major cities, including Venice, Bologna, Florence, Rome, and Naples.
The new route, a significant development for the region, was revealed on Trenitalia’s website. This enhancement is part of the Go!2025 initiative, which aims to improve connectivity as part of the celebrations for Nova Gorica and Gorizia being named European Capitals of Culture. The announcement follows a period of anticipation, with rumors circulating since early July when new hybrid trains bearing the cultural capital logo were unveiled.
The inaugural journey is set for Sunday, September 15. Train FR9430 will depart from Naples at 4:09 p.m. and is scheduled to arrive in Gorizia Centrale at 11:30 p.m. The train will make stops in Rome Termini (5:19 p.m. departure at 5:35 p.m.), Florence Santa Maria Novella (7:11 p.m. departure at 7:20 p.m.), Bologna Centrale (7:58 p.m. departure at 8:01 p.m.), and Venice Mestre (9:23 p.m. departure at 9:37 p.m.). The Gorizia-Naples connection will commence the following day.
Conversely, Train FR9409 will depart Gorizia Centrale at 6:12 a.m., with stops including Venice Mestre (8:27 a.m., departing at 8:40 a.m.), Bologna Centrale (9:59 a.m., departing at 10:02 a.m.), Florence Santa Maria Novella (10:39 a.m., departing at 10:48 a.m.), Rome Termini (12:25 p.m., departing at 12:50 p.m.), and arriving in Naples Centrale at 2:03 p.m. This route will also include stops at Rome Tiburtina, Padua, Treviso Centrale, Conegliano Veneto, Pordenone, and Udine.
The new rail service is seen as a pivotal development for Gorizia and the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, which has historically been less well-connected to other parts of Italy due to past infrastructural decisions. Caterina Belletti, president of Apt and former board member of Trenitalia, emphasized that while this is not yet the high-speed rail she envisions, it represents a positive step forward for the region.
