From August 19 to 25, Trieste will become a cultural hub as the city rolls out an ambitious summer program, spotlighting theater and cinema with a series of captivating events. The annual Trieste Estate festival, organized by the Municipality of Trieste, promises a week of vibrant performances and screenings that cater to diverse tastes and age groups.

International Children’s Theater Festival “DaDaDu”

At the heart of this year’s festivities is the International Children’s Theater Festival “DaDaDu,” an inaugural event aimed at theater enthusiasts of all ages. Held in the picturesque garden of the Sartorio Museum, this festival is set to enchant with a varied lineup that includes dance, comedy, and interactive storytelling. The festival kicks off on August 19 with “The Four Seasons” by Contrada, a multimedia celebration of nature’s cycles through theater, dance, and music.

Tuesday, August 20, features “Le Farse Meneghine – Ridi Meneghino,” a comedic romp led by a renowned Commedia dell’Arte character navigating a series of humorous escapades. On August 21, festival-goers can enjoy a modern twist on a classic fairy tale with “Snow White On The Road.” The lineup continues with “Škrt Škrt Kar Čof” on August 22, offering an engaging adventure filled with mystery and excitement for younger audiences. The festival concludes with three final performances: “Little Red Riding Hood and Grandma Carmela” (August 23), “A Lullaby for Bella” (August 24), and “Pulcinella Disaster Show” (August 25).

Outdoor Cinema at “Il Giardino del Cinema”

Alongside the theater festival, Trieste will host the outdoor cinema series “Il Giardino del Cinema” at the Giardino Pubblico de Tommasini. The film series opens on August 19 with “Palazzina Laf,” Riondino’s debut film adapted from Alessandro Leogrande’s “Fumo sulla città,” which explores Italian mobbing through the eyes of a factory worker.

The following night, August 20, Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” will transport audiences into a semi-autobiographical fantasy exploring the mysteries of life and creation. On August 21, “Kinds of Kindness” will present a three-act fairy tale about a man grappling with control over his life, a troubled policeman, and a woman on a quest for a person with special abilities. The science fiction genre takes center stage on August 23 with “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” a new chapter in George Miller’s dystopian universe. The series continues with “Bob Marley – One Love” on August 24, a biographical look at the legendary reggae artist, and wraps up on August 25 with the first chapter of “The Art of Joy,” based on Goliarda Sapienza’s novel, set in early 20th-century Sicily.

Additional Highlights

On August 20, the Winckelmann Museum will host its third installment of the evening archaeology series “Archeologia di sera, il museo si racconta,” featuring “Fantastic Clay Treasures.” This event will delve into Greek and Magna Graecian vases and the legacy of the esteemed collection gathered by Carlo d’Ottavio Fontana.
