As summer draws to a close, the Giardino del Cinema, Trieste’s open-air film arena nestled in the Public Garden “Muzio de Tommasini,” is offering one last week of diverse cinematic experiences. The program for the season’s final stretch brings together restored classics, auteur films, and international blockbusters in a unique setting that has become a beloved part of the city’s cultural landscape.
The week kicks off on Monday, September 2, with a special screening of “Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion”by Italian filmmaker Elio Petri. This 1970 masterpiece, restored by the Cineteca di Bologna, is a dark satire on power and authority. The film follows a police inspector who murders his lover on the day of his promotion, daring the system to convict him. The screening serves as a preview for the upcoming “I Mille Occhi” festival, a highlight of Trieste’s cultural calendar.
On Tuesday, September 3, audiences will be treated to “Fallen Leaves”, a tender film from Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki. Set in Helsinki, the film portrays the chance encounter of two lonely souls searching for love amid the struggles of contemporary life. Kaurismäki’s minimalist style and wry humor have earned the director a loyal following, and this film further cements his reputation as a master of understated storytelling.
In collaboration with the Alliance Française of Trieste, Wednesday, September 4 brings a poignant tribute to one of Italy’s most iconic actors with the screening of “Marcello Mio”, directed by Christophe Honoré. The film, starring Marcello Mastroianni’s daughter, Chiara Mastroianni, is a heartfelt exploration of the late actor’s legacy, presented in its original language with Italian subtitles. This homage marks the centenary of Mastroianni’s birth, celebrating his profound impact on Italian cinema.
Music and theater take center stage on Thursday, September 5, as Hangar Teatri presents “Première Étude sur Piaf – A Tribute to Edith Piaf”. The event promises to transport audiences back to the mid-20th century, reliving the highs and lows of Piaf’s storied life. In the serene and evocative atmosphere of the Giardino del Cinema, this performance is expected to be one of the season’s standout cultural experiences.
Friday, September 6, shifts the focus to contemporary issues with Ken Loach’s “The Old Oak”, a moving narrative about immigration and community in a declining English mining town. Loach’s film, known for its compassionate portrayal of working-class struggles, resonates deeply in today’s politically charged climate.
The summer season concludes on Saturday, September 7, with Kevin Costner’s sweeping historical epic “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1”. Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, this ambitious film marks the first installment of a planned saga chronicling the expansion of the American frontier. Costner’s return to the director’s chair has generated much anticipation, and the film’s lush cinematography and expansive narrative promise a fitting finale to the summer’s cinematic offerings.
Screenings are held at 9:00 PM, with entry through Via Giulia/Largo Tomizza. Tickets are priced at €6.50 for general admission and €4.00 for reduced admissions.
The Casa del Cinema is also participating in “CINEMA REVOLUTION”, a national campaign supported by the Italian Ministry of Culture and the David di Donatello Academy, offering discounted tickets for Italian and European films at €3.50 through September 19.
